Just keep on Googling those missing '.OCX' files and put them in your Window's System32 folder. They'll be more than just that.. once you paste "THREED32.OCX" in there, you'll get another error (maybe!) so just keep on Googling. Um no? The Local selective indexed color would be perfectly be imported in-game whether its a PCX or a BMP

Separate BG layer with the pure black and goto the main layer then: Select > Color Range > Image > Adjustments > Replace color... The upper color select box should have the blacks you want to 'not mask' and in the lower (result box) select something like 1,1,1 or 1,0,0 etc.. Now you can do the stuff...

I use black for masking as much as possible, pink mask are really messed up or something..
Soo.. here's what I do when I'm done and have black bg(0,0,0 pure black) in my textures;
Image > Image mode > Indexed color (Local selective)
then save as a .BMP or .PCX

That was an awesome remake!
I'm glad I can't pick up my dead-son anymore, also that tub filled with blood was way better.
As you mentioned though, you should give rewriting the dialogues a go too
