Why not give the safe an INF/INF lock and than have manderley carrying the key? Unless I am mistaken, the only time you can kill/knock him out is during the escape. That way you could restore it without causing absurdity. This just seems to just illustrate the heart of the problem even more to me. ...

I agree that two separate versions of the patch is probably the best solution.
Something like:

with a note explaining the difference.
