Where do you learn to speak English like Phasmatis?

What part of Britain would I have to drop by to pick up that beautiful, intelligent, amazingly sophisticated yet totally not pompous accent?

I'm pretty fucking skilled at picking up accents. I usually speak something akin to standard American English, but the other night I watched "Britain's Got Talent" all night long, and next morning I was talking like Simon Cowell, lol.

I want to say Manchester but I'm afraid of getting mugged and pummelled by a Brit. I recall asking Jeremiah to get us somebody with a North-English accent, because I love that shit, but I'm not capable of telling the North-English accents from each other.

I'm English and even I can't tell all the accents apart. I can say it isn't North-East though, at least not the part I come from.

It's been so long so I can only vaguely remember Phas' voice.
I'd hazard a guess at Manchester or the general north midlands area because most cities south of that often have quite distinctive accents, with the exception of places like Newcastle who also have every distinctive accents (anyone who has heard music artist Cheryl Cole speak will know what I'm talking about).

It's odd that we have such varied accents between such close cities. Birmingham and Leicester are only an hour or so away from one another and have noticeably different accents. Even Loughborough, only 15 minutes away from me in Leicester apparently has a different accent? Not sure I believe it because I've never noticed; but then I'm not the most observant person.

Newcastle and Middlesbrough (which is only a town, not a city) are about 40 minutes apart on a bad day, completely different accents. Gotta love England.

I don't know how you guys pull it off. We barely even have distinct accents on the opposite sides of the country anymore. Admittedly our country is pretty small, but 4 hours by train isn't nothing. Now adays pretty much everyone has the same accent they picked up off the TV, with slight intonation variations.

Well, back in Poland for example, there are several ethnolects but people can speak the standard variety of Polish anyway. Regional differences amount mainly to some minor differences in vocabulary, but the phonology is so simple that unless someone doesn't watch TV, they'll be speaking the same way across the whole country. Which is even more amazing considering how Poland has a larger area than Britain O_O

I was watching a tv program last night about archeology near Urecht if I've spelt that right. I thoroughly enjoyed the accent  "Can ssssshhom one hand me the ssshhhhisel?"

It's still stuck in my head lol

English people always mimic a Dutch accent by adding a lot of elaborate "ssh" sounds, but I don't understand why. A Dutch accent is rather dreadful but it has nothing to do with ssshhh sounds as far as I have ever heard.

Yeah I don't know how we manage it either.

I also think we're the only country that can argue about the different names of a bread roll...

The closest accent I could think of is the same (or very similar accent) to the one they have in Chester in the North-West (borders Wales) which is close to the Liverpool accent, watch this UK Pawn Stars video and you'll hear what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp7R_CLLRqQ

While we are on this, I love how Americans do Irish accents on tv shows, voice overs and cartoons (Simpsons, Family Guy etc...) if not done by real Irish people. Irish people don't really sound like that, like how some do the voice (especially an Irish woman's voice not voice by an Irish woman) tone having one sound as if it is word is going up and the next word is coming down.

I have always loved That_Guy's voice acting. Not just his accent but the playful tone in which he delivers his lines fit perfectly with the mood of the game. Almost sounds like a Australian accent but I'm no expert at these things :)

As for the supposed Irish accent... I get the impression that Americans actually confuse the Scottish accent with it. I've been to Ireland and I wouldn't say their accent is even that distinct.

I don't know whether you still need the answer, I'm from Lincolnshire and judging from his voice I'm almost sure he's from somewhere around this area.
