TNM Poster Art Project

Post by teknikal »

Hi everyone!

It's been a while, but I'm back with a fresh bunch of enthusiasm.

I've been sitting on the idea of making a piece of full-sized poster art for The Nameless Mod during my absence.
So here's the plan... A piece of splash-art featuring key characters and/or key imagery from the game; something slick, beautiful and awesome enough to print out as a poster or even slap on a t-shirt.
It'll probably be rendered out with the same level of polish (or better than, I hope!) as the pic of Kylie I drew for Jonas: http://teknikal-vision.deviantart.com/a ... -118243740

I've been scribbling some ideas down, but basically I want YOU Off Topic to help me out with this as I'm determined to make it great.
So some collaborative feedback, advice and ideas throwing will be great, since it is your IP and no-one knows it better than you.

Now I know the poster MUST include Trestkon, Scara, Deus Diablo, King Kashue, Phasmatis and I really want to feature ZeroPresence and Kylie Griffin too.
From my research, the best splash art features anywhere between 4-13 characters, so WHO or WHAT deserves an essential place on the poster? :D

Oh and here's some WIP sketches and some other random scribbles I've been doing while thinking about this...

ROUGH WIP MOCK-UP:

A FEW RANDOM CHARACTER STUDIES JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT:

Larry told me you were doing this. I've found a company in the UK where you can upload high-res art to their site and they'll print a poster and mail it to you, I'm hoping they ship to Denmark.

I would recommend putting Ryan in there somewhere, but I think the characters you've mentioned should suffice. Don't want it to be too busy, I think? As for a backdrop, something that represents Forum City (even if it's just silhouettes of a metropolitan skyline) would fit best, since FC really is the centrepiece of the mod. We usually feature the ROFL satellite in our own artwork too, since it represents GameSpy and the final mission without giving anything away, but alternatively you could show the space station at the top.

The chosen colour theme of TNM is dark blue with white text - the default HUD theme. It's pretty much Deus Ex's default colour scheme of course.

I think that's all I've got :)
Really looking forward to seeing this bastard on my wall.

I agree with Jonas that keeping the character count lower would probably make for a better poster. The 7 that you mentioned the the favorites for me, Nik

EDIT: I can't view your mockup as I'm at work (it's blocked), but I'll comment on it later :)

Awesome. Thanks for the thoughts so far you two!
I'm taking it all into account.

Yeah I agree less is better. The hardest part is narrowing it down, but I am glad I've hit the right notes with it so far.
Looking forward to your thoughts on the initial mock-up Larry!

...Oh and someone will need to give me nice hi-res versions of the title text and the OTP logo and stuff to dress it up with when its done. ;)

Sweet and thanks!

I'm currently in the mode of screencapping all the character references I need and I am practising drawing them.
I'll update as soon as I've done more substantial work on it.

And I'll be sure to email ya when I need them hi-res stuffs. :)

Hey all.

Arrgh... first week of university of finally crept up on me. I hate my subjects this semester. They all suck; Experimental Video (yay...movies with no narrative... *dies*), Digital Curation and Exhibition (NOOOOO NOT THATTTT!!!!! *cries* YOU CAN'T MAKE ME VOLUNTEER AT A GALLERY!!! YOU CAAAANNN'T!!! SAVE ME JONAS!!! YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I HATE THIS TRIPE!!!) and some random Photoshop course thats completely pointless.

The only thing that's going to keep me sane is my (freedom filled) Major Project. *hugs it*

In the meantime I'll be putting this project on hold for a wee bit as I get my head around these subjects I fail to function in (no doubt I'll be so bored by them I'll be more inclined to work on the poster instead of my actual assignments ;) ).

More work from me ASAP.

Unfortunately we all have to go crap we don't like in life. I'd much rather be in a bloody 3D Design School right now but will most likely have to wait at a few years before doing that (because of crap requirements the centres have). The course I'm doing doesn't even earn me anything but a certificate saying I can do this and that, I highly doubt it'd be viable in a job-like environment.

Must say though, your artwork is bloody wicked. The picture of Scara is by far my favourite (Scara pwns).

I say Uni but I go to some other form of tertiary education that when I say what it is many people go "WTF is that?" so I generally substitute it with "It's like University. Same diplomas, more real-world experience."

By the time I'm 20-21 I'm hoping to be in that position.

Yeah, I'll stop complaining 'cause I'll survive. It'll just be irritably boring to survive through.
Anyways, I was right. Annoying uni work resulted in a me doing a little update on this postery thingamabob:

MINOR UPDATE

Added rough placement sketches of That Guy and Evil Invasion based on some feedback from Dragon on Deviant Art (http://teknikal-vision.deviantart.com/a ... -128590187)

Image

From this stage... I'm going to tweak the placements of the TNM title text and the position of Evil Invasion.
Still to add: Ryan, the ROFL and a background that represents Forum City. And once the rough mock-up is done and finalized I can make a start on the final image! WHOO HOO!!!

Oh and I need a favor. Can someone give me a bunch of screen caps of Ryan? I would get these myself but I haven't got any saved games anywhere near that part of the game at the moment. Gotta trade my game playing time right now, for drawing and artsy time. :D
