Downtown Rework

Post by ZeroPresence »

Well, over the week I'm 100% busy as most know, so I don't have time to open the editor and sit down for some nice long work and testing. I'd highly appreciate it if someone can get on the FTP and see if that big ass block I put in there fixes the frame rate some.

Thanks gents! See you on the weekend.

Hey Chris, the old map gave me 7-10 FPS when looking back from the llama temple, but with your change it's pretty steady on 20-21, so it's a definite improvement. I walked around a bit and I didn't really feel a stutter, so I think you should go with this solution. I admit I was a little sceptical but obviously this was a really good idea. The view is even still pretty nice in my opinion. Just make sure that building looks really cool ;)

As for the area beneath the building, around the metro entrance, I suggest you put a few closed shops there and maybe a newspaper stand or something so it looks a bit like those small kiosk areas you find around some of the subway entrances in London:

(As an aside, the Internet depresses me: I Google "london subway" and about three quarters of the images I get are related to the bombings :( )

I did wonder about that to be honest, but I thought it'd be best not to ask any questions. The image looks more or less how I remember a particular London subway station.

Hey DDL, you're sort of English. Do you reckon you could get away with snapping a photo or two of one of those stations on your way from work, or would that get you in trouble with MI5?

Sadly, while sort of english, I'm also sort of in the wrong city. Bristol barely has a decent BUS service, let alone an underground.

Still, doing some GISs on 'london underground shops' turns up some nice stuff ocasionally..

and south ken has a nice cluster of shops in the foyer

So maybe you need to refine your search a little. Or just go for undergrounds stations in germany. :)

Well the image I posted should do. The important thing is that it looks like a shopping area without adding 2000 new brushes to the map :)

Excellent! That building does just the trick, and looks sexy doing it :D

Are you going to slap some lights into the tunnels through the building? I think that's about the only thing it needs. Maybe one or two little interesting details in the tunnels as well, if you're inclined.

The curving tunnels aren't really necessary and they seem kinda odd. How about replacing them with a single, wider tunnel that just cuts straight through the building? Trestkon is right though, some lights would be nice. And finally, it would be nice if you could put some of that blueish ambient lighting on the top part of the building, so it's not pitch black like right now.

And so the player can see how nice it looks :)

well putting a straight hallway totally defeats the purpose of putting that blocker there, because you will still have a straight view to the other end of the map. I may be able to make the turns in the halls a little less dramatic. Also, there's gonna be some shop windows to perdy it up.

Well shop windows will help, that will also make it less illogical. But really the building is there to block the view from up on the temple hill, and you won't be able to look through the tunnel from the hill. From down on the level with Phas' apartment, there's no stutter problem.

Anyway yeah, shop windows will help.

With shop windows, it really won't be illogical at all. It's just a little mini-mall type deal.

I actually know of places exactly like this in the city near here. They're just not designed to block view due to stutter. ;)
