Beta OpenAL audio

Post by Dr.Flay »

You lucky people. Just the thing to go with shiny new visuals is shiny new sound.
After successfully testing new audio renderers for Unreal and UT for some time, Smirftsch at OldUnreal has also decided to build the new OpenAL audio renderers for Deus Ex :D
They sound amazing, but they are not finished yet. You can grab test versions here Oldunreal.com and follow the progress.
It is almost finished for full release, and beta testers are most welcome.

The new audio is much more precise at positioning sounds, so if you have surround sound you will really notice the benefit of being able to pinpoint sounds.
In Unreal and UT it can add EFX audio ambience to and zoned areas. This shows as a new zone item in UEd.

The new audio render features audio attenuation and sound occlusion, so sounds though wall or in rooms, sound muffled or reflected, rather than just quieter or louder.

Currently there is an issue with the mp3 playback for the barks, and he is trying to avoid needing to rebuild the u file with the speech clips, so currently this is not fit for playing the full game.
Programmers and geeks are most welcome to give advice, as Smirftsch is not very familiar with Deus Ex.

Way cool! Do you know whether it'd support speaker setups bigger than stereo (4.0, 5.1, 7.1, etc.)?

Good question.
technically speaking it supports everything that EAX v1 supports.
I'm not to sure how adaptive EAX is as there in no channel selection involved, unlike Galaxy and FMOD.
It just adapts to whatever your card is set to as far as I can tell.
