Could someone explain some of the references this game uses?
Okay, I actually know very little about Gamespy. Is TNM parodying GS because they are evil in real life? Any other explanations to some of the references would be appreciated.
Re: Could someone explain some of the references this game uses?
GameSpy aren't evil. They've made some decisions we disagree with, but they hosted us for the first couple of years of development, and we were very happy with their help. We just parody them because it fits the plot, it makes for an interesting twist, and we think they have a good enough sense of humour to handle it

Also their icon is a shady figure in a green trench coat, and in some areas on the site they have some full body representations of the "GameSpy".... Which just so happens to look like an Alien.

What I want to know is why everyone is so surprised at the existence of gamespy when every computer has it displayed in clear view (but that also applies to the original Deus Ex with it's AIs in the url line...)

Are you saying you predicted the GameSpy twist the moment you saw those URL's? If so, you're sharper than I - I certainly didn't see Daedalus coming before the UNATCO MJ12 base in Deus Ex

What I wonder is: What does IGN think of GameSpy being taken over/destroyed?

We talked to the GameSpy guys about it before they were acquired by IGN, and they had no problem with it.

He was talking 'within the game fiction' I believe.Jonas wrote:We talked to the GameSpy guys about it before they were acquired by IGN, and they had no problem with it.

Why IS Gamespy called Gamespy? That's been bothering me ever since I first heard the name. It's like its designed perfectly to make the player uncomfortable in using them due to being spied on.

Pretty sure ign and gamespy hadn't merged when tnm was set (or at least it wasn't when the plot was developed).
Gamespy provide the obvious secret overlord figure because they actually do control planet deus ex.

I do wonder why they are called Gamespy, maybe they are spies....

Gamespy used to be a programme for finding mulitplayer servers, I think they bought PlanetQuake or they owned PlanetQuake and it went on from there. This is going from memory though, so don't quote me.

I wasn't aware Gamespy wasn't anything else BUT a server browser and property of IGN before this thread, actually.Phasmatis wrote:Gamespy used to be a programme for finding mulitplayer servers, I think they bought PlanetQuake or they owned PlanetQuake and it went on from there. No, I mean everyone acts as though they have never heard of it, but it's strange when it's in every URL line. Even if someone has no idea what HTTP IS I would expect anyone familiar with the internet to say "Http? That thing in web addresses?" over "Http? Never heard of it" .Jonas wrote:Are you saying you predicted the GameSpy twist the moment you saw those URL's?
