I'll just quote RPS's entire post here:
Gametap, that surging faucet of digital delivery, has announced that it’ll be featuring candidate for best game ever, Deus Ex, on its free games roster as of next week. The Big Ex joins Psychonauts and Thief: Deadly Shadows on its free game thinger. You will again be able to celebrate some of the greatest moments in gaming.

I have to say, actually, that it’s about time we had some more Deus Ex 3 news for Kieron to dissect at terrifying length. Come on, Eidos, leak some more info already.

Someone mentioned that it's probably going to be a US and Canada exclusive offer.

I hate Gametap's free service's behavior. I honestly most likely would've signed up for an actual gametap account because of all the games they've got if it weren't for how annoying the free version is in how often it begs you to pay for an account and delays you from launching games and runs slow and is just in general really fucking annoying. If they had just let the service on its own do the talking, I would've been sold.

It's not really free. You have to have a Gold Pass or whatever so no advertisement pops up before you start the game.

Plenty of other download services have Deus Ex for very cheap, like Steam and Direct2Drive.

But you can still play it with the advertisements in the beginning if you don't have a gold pass, right?

So it's free then.

Thanks for posting it. Good promotion, and it could widen the fan base.

I generally advise against dealing with companies like this though. They make money solely through the limitations they place on digital works. Copy protection in general is a similar issue, though often the people who use it actually make the games. I'm sure DeusEx is cheap enough already, and if it cannot be found anywhere on sale (extremely unlikely) then I'd sooner recommend copyright infringement. Respect to Vivendi Universal for releasing Tribes 1 and 2 for free as a Tribes:Vengeance promotion, and to Rockstar for releasing GTA1 and 2 also for free. AFAIK, only GTA2 was modified from the original release, and that was a patch "to enable support for modern PC's".

Yeah I heard that someone found copy protection in this version so that you can't mod the game. It'd suck if thats the case, once the game stops selling and the ESA pisses off maybe they can declare the game abandoned ware since IMO no one is going to make any more money off the game.

I got Postal 2: MP Edition for free from Fileplanet today, but the description fucking LIED, it claimed this version also included the full single player game with 2 additional maps. >:( Not a single of the MP servers (all 16 or so of them) had less than 150 ping for me, either.

Abandonware is already morally and legally dubious as it is, declaring a game to be abandonware if you can still purchase it online for cheap would be really difficult to argue for.
