Playing through DX again - this time with ENBSeries
I bought DX when it first came out - and I am playing through it again and still discovering stuff I never found before (I can't believe how much I missed in the Paris levels on past plays ). I am wondering if there is anyone here who is playing with the ENBseries.
I can't believe the difference it makes in the atmosphere of the game (DX was always a dark game but now with ENBseries the shadows are menacing). I have finally got the Depth of Field looking nice in the game, the only problem is that it really blurs the text in the game -- anybody know a fix for this?
I can't wait until New Vision is done - I wonder what effect the bump-mapping will have on the high-res textures.

Re: Playing through DX again - this time with ENBSeries
The problem with the ENBseries, I found, was that the bumpmapping is (at least in places) utterly horrible. The walls of unatco HQ look like they belong in the body of the many, for example. And yet, from what I can see, the bumpmapping is necessary for things like reflective bloom and the like to work (or at least, that sort of thing looks terrible if you massively reduce the visible bumpmapping).
The whole thing was certainly incredibly impressive, but just...frustrating in that it wasn't quite right.
EDIT: but by all means, post your settings: I may simply have set mine up really badly.

I'll post some screenshots in a day or two
There are definitely a few things that I noticed that are off because of it (TV textures are horrid), but I can't help but think that might be fixed with high-res textures.

CHRIST. I see what you mean about the text.
Though to be honest, on my comp those settings just make everything and everyone look like they're drowing in vaseline.
EDIT: oh yeah, and transparency doesn't work, for some reason?

Re: Playing through DX again - this time with ENBSeries
I can't remember what I did - but I did fix the transparency & mirror issues with the DX9 driver on my computer. Next time I'm on my PC I'll post my DX settings file and that should fix up those issues.
I find the blur is good for masking certain issues (though it adds a few of its own). I am still trying to perfect the way it looks in DX (I've got it in Fallout3 right now working much better).

Does ENBseries work on Vista?(being a DX9 plugin and all that) I am currently stuck with Vista on my desktop so I won't be able to try it on XP anytime soon.

Re: Playing through DX again - this time with ENBSeries
wait someone actually made Depth of Field that doesn't look shit?! WTF!? Greatest discovery EVER!!! lol
or in other words, Depth of Field is utterly stupid-- just as Bloom is... well when its used in crazy amounts. I mean you'd think someone by now would have learned that SUBTLETY == AWESOME and that Bloom Blurry Fuck is == FAIL- see Empire total War for awesome Blurry Fuck-- because the DOF in that game is SHIT.. I keep cleaning my monitor thinking I spilt my drink on the screen.. but it never comes off!! WTF?!

Technician: "Kid Genius told me to mess with the horizontal hold! He wants the picture to roll!"
Guy in charge: "Show me."
The technician pushes a button. On a monitor, Andy's image briefly appears, then begins to roll across the screen before finally disappearing in a blur of static.
Andy Kaufman: "It'll be great! The viewer will think their TV is broken. They'll get out of their chair, they'll twist the knobs, they'll hit the TV, but they won't be able to fix it!"
Re: Playing through DX again - this time with ENBSeries
To be honest, that's my attitude to an awful lot of these 'high end' graphical enhancements.
Half of them try to mimic what your eyes do anyway (which is pointless: your EYES ARE DOING IT ANYWAY), and the other half try to make things like like a bad movie.
Depth of field should only ever be applied when looking through a sniper scope or binoculars or something: this is the only time in human experience when you can actually LOOK at something out of focus (unless you count deliberately crossing your eyes).
Motion blur: maybe when in uberspeed just to highlight the fact that "lol uberspeed", but otherwise: wtf? When I look round fast, does everything blur? No, of course it fucking doesn't. The whole concept completely defeats what human eyes DO.
Bloom: this one I can allow, along with HDR. Given that your average monitor cannot actually produce blinding light, mimicking the effect by vaseline-smear and dynamic lighting adjustments is actually surprisingly effective.
Film grain: WTF. Aside from L4D, where the whole premise is to make it feel like a zombie movie (a particularly inept zombie movie in my case), this is just stupid. And even in L4D I kinda want to turn it off. "We've spent years and years of graphical development to produce unbelievably crisp, detail images. Now let's add a speckled distortion field over the top. Oh, and make everything blurred if you move slightly faster. And make it so your focus drifts in and out inexplicably. Yay."
But hey: lighting and shadows: they're pretty hot.

Re: Playing through DX again - this time with ENBSeries
I guess I am the only one here who like DoF and motion blur. Also I like film grain effects when they are used convincingly (anything is good to cover up jagged edges on models).
Anyhow I'm not going to lie and say I don't like new graphics and shaders -- although I agree they are not completely necessary to make an enjoyable game, and they should be used with taste.
