Then they told me a story about Danish people, Swedish and potatoes. And one about Norwegian people, a lot of alcohol and singing. I can't exactly recall the details, but I'm pretty sure that the gist was that everything is kind of mutually intelligible, as long as there are potatoes and/or hard liquor involved.

It goes like this:

Danish sounds like you're speaking Swedish with a potato in your mouth.
Swedish sounds like you're speaking Danish without the potato, but while you're extremely drunk.
Norwegian sounds like you're singing in Swedish.

There was a Scandinavia And The World comic about that once, but I can't be arsed finding it.

BTW Dutch sounds like you're speaking Danish while suffering from an awful, debilitating throat disease.

I think everyone around the world would accept the throat disease part, but I think a lot of people think we speak German or something. Or to put it like someone I once met: "Holland huh? I didn't know you guys spoke English over there". This is because we don't ...

Hahah. Yeah I met a guy in Canada who was surprised to find that Denmark was bilingual.

It's not. I took it as a compliment, obviously.

Anyway, to me Dutch sounds more like Danish than like German. But really, it doesn't make a huge difference: Danish is like German as interpreted by Norse people (or vice versa), it's a weird sort of bastard child of Scandinavian and Germanic.

It probably helps that you can tell the difference between Dutch and German. And yes, Danish reads like German-ish, but it's like you purposefully mispronounce all words.
