I get the feeling bioware could not reconcile the BUTTAN=AWESUM rule with the cthulhu nature of the reapers they established in ME1.

Well, it was a BIG reaper, and it did die eventually. And that was before everyone and his uncle had thanix cannons.

What you're describing is exactly how it should have been, because, as I stressed, this is how you feel when you actually play the game.

I mean, this is not unique to you. But for all their playtesting (and I assume they didn't playtest the ending), whoever was in charge - Casey Hudson? - just did not understand. I don't know how you can be so out of touch that you don't get it. It's pretty fucking far beyond groupthink. This is about understanding the very essence of the game you're making.

And yet it completely fails. And they fall back on this notion of what they think the game is (...the descend into the abyss I described...) rather than LoTR in space (which is what it actually is).

Heh. This gives me an idea.

Code: Select all

                        SAM
We have to go in there, Mr Frodo. There's
nothing for it. Come on. Let's just make it
             down the hill for starters.

Scene change to Minas Tirith

                        GANDALF
Frodo has passed beyond my sight. The
             darkness is deepening.

                       ARAGORN
If Sauron had the ring, we would know it.

                        GANDALF
It's only a matter of time. He has suffered
a defeat, yes, but behind the walls of
             Mordor our enemy is regrouping.

                        GIMLI
Let him stay there. Let him rot. Why should
             we care?

                        GANDALF
Because ten thousand Orcs now stand between
             Frodo and Mount Doom.

                        GANDALF
I have sent him to his death.

                        ARAGORN
             No.

                       ARAGORN
There is still hope for Frodo. He needs
time and safe passage across the Plains of
Gorgoroth. We can give him that.

                        GANDALF
             How?

                        ARAGORN
Draw out Sauron' s armies - empty his lands.
Then we gather our full strength and march
             on the Black Gate.

                        EOMER
We cannot achieve victory from strength of
             arms.

                        ARAGORN
Not for ourselves . . . But we can give Frodo
his chance if we keep Sauron' s eye fixed
upon us. Keep him blind to all else that
             moves .

                         LEGOLAS
             A diversion . . .

                         GANDALF
Sauron will suspect a trap. He will not
             take the bait!

                         GIMLI
Certainty of death. Small chance of
success. What are we waiting for?

Massive Battle Scene at the Black Gate. Mordor is slowly but surely winning.

Scene at the foot of mount doom:

                         SAM
             It's gone, Mr Frodo.

                         SAM
The light's passed on, away towards the
             North . . . something's drawn it's gaze.

Scene within Mount Doom, after the ring and gollum have plummeted into lava and Frodo is hanging on
with one hand:

                        SAM
Don't you let go! Don't let go.
             Reach!!!

ANGLE ON: Frodo reaches up once more and this time sam grasps his hand tighly. He pulls him up.

CLOSE ON: The ring sits on the river of lava for a brief moment, then sinks away . . .

ANGLE ON: the eye of Sauron atop Barad-dûr . .

Nothing happens.

Then suddenly, within Mount Doom, a bright light shines down from above and the incorporeal form of
Fëanor descends onto the edge of the bridge.

                        SAM
             What? Who are you?

                        Fëanor
I'm what allowed Sauron to make the One Ring.

                        Frodo
I thought Mount Doom was what allowed him to make the One Ring?

                        Fëanor
No. Mount Doom is a part of me.

                        Sam
We need to stop Sauron. Can you help us do that?

                        Fëanor
Perhaps. I control Sauron. He is my solution.

                        Frodo
             Solution? To what?

                        Fëanor
             Chaos.

                        Fëanor
Evil will always eventually overcome Good within any society, and it will completely
destroy itself and everything around it.

                        Fëanor
But we found a way to stop that from happening. A way to restore order for the next age.

                        Sam
             By conquering and murdering everybody?

                        Fëanor
             No.

                        Fëanor
We only harvest advanced societies, leaving the younger ones alone.
Just as we left the hobbits of the shire alive the last time Sauron rose.

                        Sam
             But you killed the rest!

                        Fëanor
We helped them ascend, so they can make way for new life, storing the old life in Ring form.

                        Frodo
I think we'd rather keep our own form!

                        Fëanor
No, you can't. Without us to stop it, evil would destroy all good.

                        Frodo
But you're taking away our future, our hope!
Without hope, we might as well be orcs, mindless savages living in the dirt.

                        Fëanor
You have hope, more than you think. The fact that you're standing here,
the first people who ever made it this far, proves that. But it also proves my solution won't
             work anymore.

                        Sam
             So now what?

                        Fëanor
             We find a new solution.

                        Sam
             Yeah, but how?

                        Fëanor
When you dropped the ring back into the lava, it changed me. It created new possibilities.
But I can't make them happen. I know you've thought about destroying all evil.
You can destroy all evil if you want, but even you are partly evil by now.
All the people of Gondor are also a little bit evil by now, so they will die too, including Aragorn.

                        Sam
             But Sauron will be destroyed?

                        Fëanor
Yes, but the peace won't last. Soon your children will turn to evil, and all life will end.

                        Frodo
             Maybe.

                        Fëanor
Or, do you think you can control the power of Sauron yourself?

                        Sam
So Boromir was right after all?

                        Fëanor
Yes, but he could not have controlled us, because we already controlled him, through his
             Gondor bloodline.

                        Frodo
             But we can?

                        Fëanor
You will die. You will control us, but you will lose everything you are.

                        Sam
             But Sauron will obey us?

                        Fëanor
Yes. But there is another solution.

                        Frodo
             Yeah?

                        Fëanor
             Synthesis.

                        Frodo
             And that is?

                        Fëanor
Add your energy to the power of the rings. Everything you are will be absorbed, and then sent
out. The chain reaction will combine all good and evil life into a new framework. A new kind of
             soul.

                        Frodo
             I don't know.

                        Fëanor
Why not? Orcs and treants and dwarves and elves are not that different from you.
Do you imagine your life will be that different?

                        Sam
             And there will be peace?

                        Fëanor
The cycle will end. Synthesis is the final state of the soul, but we need eachother to make it
happen. You have a difficult decision. Releasing the energy of the Mount Doom will end the
cycle, but it will also make massive walls appear all over middle earth making travel about
5000 times more difficult, potentially stranding all your friends at the black gate. The paths are
open, but you have to choose.
