Windows Dev Environment for Saturn

Post by AmosLewis »

Hi,

Not sure if anyone here follows Jaguar development, but I'm currently a full-time Atari Jaguar developer (took a break in my SW engineering career, to follow my passion), with my first game to be released around January 2019.

Here's a very old vid of the game, originally inspired by StunRunner, running on the engine I've been developing in my free time these past few years (before going fulltime recently)

As for emulators, if you're working on an unmodded Saturn initially, using an emulator like Yabause sounds like a sensible choice. It might lack some specific hardware features, but it should be great for development and debugging purposes. Just keep exploring your options and see which emulator fits your needs best.

As for porting your game to the Saturn, I think it's a great idea! The similarities between Jag and Saturn HW-wise should definitely work in your favor. It's fantastic that Saturn has a fully working C compiler for SH-2s, making it much easier to support as a second platform compared to the challenges you faced with Jaguar. Regarding your dev environment, the setup you've mentioned seems quite comprehensive. But you may still need such keys https://www.reddit.com. This will ensure a higher quality of work. Since the SH compiler supports multiple targets, it's reasonable to assume SH-2 should be targetable too. Reusing the environment you had for Dreamcast might be a good starting point, but it's always good to keep an eye out for any improvements or specific tools for Saturn development.
