That was polite of them, to call JC a "Renaissance Man". Main player characters, and even the central characters in many books, are usually empty since they have to represent all players/readers. Think Little Mac (PunchOut), or Jim Hawkins (Treasure Island).
Niko Belic is a surprising exception. Other exceptions could be Liu Kang and Fox McCloud, considering their character development is generally equal to other characters in their respective series. Other characters, like Pikachu and Sonic were developed outside the games. I forget how much development was put into Manny Calavera, but I seem to remember it was a bit more than usual.
