Post What to Install to Get All HD Textures and Related MODS
Hi,

I installed Deus Ex from my Game of the Year Edition CD, which included all the old textures. Then, I wasn't sure what to install to get all the latest HD textures and related mods. I searched around on the forum and found the following file on a download link:

HDTP-Release3.exe (I installed it)

I ran the game using the original DeusEx.exe launcher (no other launcher was provided), to determine what I got. It didn't look like I had any new textures by just viewing the beginning of the game on the first dock. I closed the game.

I then looked at the install files on the hard drive. I noticed that I only had one new texture called HDTPanim.utx, located in a new HDTP folder. All the rest were dated from 2000 and prior, all located in the original Textures folder further down in the file structure.

I then returned to this forum looking for answers. I found another post linking to a site to download an update called:

HDTP-Release3-NV.exe (I installed it)

I then ran the game using the same original launcher as before (no other laucher was provided), and noticed that the game looked much better texture wise, as viewed from the beginning at the dock. So far, so good, I think.

The texture files on the hard drive now show about 46 new HD texture files in the New Vision folder. There's still 57 old texture files in the original texture folder, further down in the file structure.

I have three questions. My first question is: Do I need to install anything else to get all the HD textures and whatever other mods are assiciated with this HD project?

My 2nd question is: Can I remove all the old textures from my hard druve, to save space? I suppose some of them are still needed, so I must know which ones to remove, not? Maybe I can compare the old names to the new HD names and remove any duplicates?

My 3rd question is: I have Maps in two locations on the hard drive, as follows:

I have 13 Maps under the New Vision folder,

and 84 Maps under the HDTP folder.

I noticed that there may be some duplicate Maps there among the folders. Is this right? Maybe I have a mess from installing. What should I do?

Thanks much,

Fred

Edit: I'm running the latest version of Windows 10, Intel Core i7-6700K processor, 16GB RAM DDR4, Radeon R9-380 4GB graphics card, and other high end hardware.

I had a hard time getting the game to install from the original retail DeusEx CD. Windows 10 didn't want to recognize the game CD, for some reason. After repeated attempts to get the game installed, it finally installed.

So far, the game seems to be working properly, but I've only tested it at the beginning on the dock there. I'm still working on understanding whether I have everything I need installed.

Actually there's two modifications. One called HDTP, one called New Vision. HDTP addresses characters and items, New Vision addresses the environment. In installing the official HDTP package (HDTP-Release3.exe), you got modified characters and items, which would have been very prevalent in the opening scene. You could have gotten the official New Vision installer or do like you did and got HDTP-Release3-NV.exe, which is a one-shot installer for both.

The launcher by Kentie should be an available option in the installer.

No.

No. Each file is a package of many textures. Most were replaced, some were not. You need to keep all the files in order to make sure all textures are available.

The New Vision creator chose to modify certain maps in order to make the graphics work out better. You can leave these maps as they are.

For the main Deus Ex game, you're fine. If you start playing level mods (TNM, ZODIAC, etc), you'll notice that they all don't necessarily support HDTP and New Vision completely. This can't be helped.

ggrotz,

Good to see a response. I wasn't confident that I'd get one. Ha! Great to know the forum still has activity. I bought the retail game CD years ago, but I never got around to playing it. Shame on me.

Now that I understand that I'm good to go for playing the main game, I'll soon get started. I haven't done much with it yet, just waiting to make sure I got started on the right foot, what with all the new graphics. I like bling, and I don't want to mess anything.

You say that the launcher by Kentie should be an available option in the installer. I think I'll try that launcher, since you mention it. How do i find that option? Maybe I missed it when I installed the upgrades? or maybe can I find it somewhere else? I guess what I'm saying is that I don't know how to find that option.

I like everything you said. To be honest, I didn't really know what I was doing when I installed those upgrades. I just looked around in the forum and stumbled on what looked like the right items to download. So, I took a deep breath and installed them. It worked!

Thanks much,

Fred

Edit: I noticed that you crafted a launcher, with version 2.03 available, I think. How about that? Maybe I should try yours?

2nd Edit: I found Kentie's launcher at his website. I downloaded and installed it in my System folder, as directed. So far, so good. The directions also say to download a Runtime file. I downloaded it, and it's named VC redist-x86.exe. Now what? The instructions didn't include what to do with this Runtime download. I have it in my Downloads folder waiting for instructions. Do I just run it, or what?

3rd Edit: OK, I went ahead and ran the Runtime file. What the heck! What could go wrong? Well, nothing! After doing that, I launched Kentie's launcher and it works, I think. Anyway, it ran the game, so I think I'm all set.

I just have one question: In Kentie's options, there's one to check "use one core." What should I do with that. I'm running a 4-core i7 with hyperthreading, thus 8 cores. Power to spare.

4th Edit: Question: I stumbled on a post here that provided a link to a file called FixedTextures.zip. Is that download something I should install?

It's more or less like Kentie's but does things a bit differently (a lot less intrusive). It's more of a loader that makes setting changes for you than it is a replacement Deus Ex exe like Kentie's. But a lot of the same idea. The feature in mine that's unique is that it has a drive space saver compatible with more modern Windows systems with NTFS drives that you can run. If you do a lot of saved games within Deus Ex or the level mods, it can take up a lot of space in a hurry. That space saver will set up the files so they use less actual hard drive space using the features in Windows that weren't present when Deus Ex was originally released. (Windows will report the same size on the files, but you'll see more free space on the drive more or less).

Multi-core computers weren't a thing when Deus Ex was released. As a result, sometimes there can be problems. Checking that will limit Deus Ex to one core, which might fix those problems. Since it only utilizes one core anyway, there's no harm in setting that.

Referenced thread. A lot of threads here reference development projects of various kinds. Since a lot of the projects referenced on this forum are more open-source than not, people just throw things out. Those are raw textures that reference misspellings that exist on some of the New Vision textures. More or less, you don't need to worry about it or anything that isn't a formal release.

ggrotz,

OK, my good man. I think I've got everything I need to get this game running as intended. It's about time, too. I also play modern games, like Fallout 4. Even so, I also play classics, like old Unreal and Unreal Tournament 1999. Those two have some updated textures, too, as well as lots of custom map packs available for download. I have about 50 custom map packs installed between those two, and I play them from time-to-time when I have nothing better to do.

Good. When you're ready for custom games/levels as mods for Deus Ex, there's about a dozen or so of those like "The Nameless Mod" and "ZODIAC". You'll see some references here, but if you want help with things to find, don't hesitate to ask. Honestly for my game playing, I've pretty much stuck to that for a number of reasons. Can't say I've ever been bored when I've just moved from one to the next.

Thanks for the encouragement. It'll take me a while to get through the basic Deus Ex. But when I do, I'll be back, for sure.

Just for information, in case anyone's interested. I installed Deus Ex on another computer that I have that's also running the latest version of Windows 10, like the computer on my earlier posts.

This computer uses an Intel i7-7700 Kaby Lake 4-core processor. I installed the processor in a mini-STX case that has no room for a discrete graphics card. So, I had to use the integrated Intel HD-630 graphics that comes with the processor.

Just like when i installed the game on my other computer, this little computer also refused to recognize the Deus Ex game CD when I tried to install the game. I think the problem is that Windows 10 sees the game and thus the CD as incompatible.

Just like before, I fiddled a long time to get the game to install. I used every setting available, like no user account control, all the various compatiblilty settings, etc., over and over, Finally, after a long time of fiddling, for no apparent reason, the game's install GUI option popped up.

The game installed, but the final decompression of the texture file failed to decompress. Even so, the single compressed texture file was sitting in the Deus Ex textures folder on the hard drive. I just decompressed it there. Ha! Job done! Took long enough. I think most would have given up. I'm stubborn.

I then installed all the HDTP and Vision graphics uggrades, along with Kentie's installer, and all is well. I then tried D3D10, because that renderer worked well in my other computer. On this little gem, the graphics looked terrible with that. I then tried D3D, and it looked even worse. Yikes! In desperation, I tried D3D9, and the graphics looked perfect. Lucky me. Home free!

The Intel integrated HD-630 graphics works well with this Deus Ex with its custom high end graphics. The game runs smoothly on high settings. Very nice.

Fred

Edit: Also, the game won't work in Windows 10, before installing all the HDTP and Vision upgrades. To play the game prior to installing the upgrades, you have to insert the game CD into the CD-ROM drive. However, Windows 10 doesn't recognize the CD. Thus, the game won't start. I believe that's because Windows 10 sees it as incompatible. After installing the HDTP and Vision upgrades, the game works properly without the game CD.

All,

If anyone is having problems installing Deus Ex, and you own the original GOTY CD of the game, the following solution for the problem was found on another forum:

Make a new folder on the Hard Drive and name it Deus Ex Install. Then, copy all the contents from the Deus Ex game CD to this new folder.

Then, in the Deus Ex Install folder on the hard drive, right click the Setup.exe and select Run as administrator (important). The game should install. Just follow on-screen prompts, as usual.

After the installation completes, just download and install 2 files: HDTP-Release3-NV.exe and Kentie's installer. Your done.
I haven't tried this solution. I'm just passing it along in case it proves useful.

Post Re: What to Install to Get All HD Textures and Related MODS
Hi,

I'm making good progress in playing the game. I'm currently in Hong Kong, but I've run into a problem with how the game is treating my save games. It seems when I reached 1,000 saves, I can't save any more. All my new saves now overwrite the previous save, I can't make new saves. Many saves are not there. I'm missing many saves because of this.

This feature is ruining my progress. When I needed to load a prior save, it isn't there. I didn't notice this until it was too late. For a long time I didn't understand what was going on in this situation.

I don't need this limitation. Daily, I delete all but the last 10 saves from the Documents folder. I have plenty of hard drive space. Because I remove daily all but the last 10 saves, I actually don't have 1,000 saves. The game doesn't understand this. I don't need the game to take care of me. I can take of myself in this type situation. How do I remove this feature? I'm not a happy camper!

I need to repeat a certain quest line, but I can't start where I need to, because the save at the proper point isn't there. Who came up with this idea? In my daily exercise, I didn't remove the save I need. The save I need is within the same day. It just happens to be somewhere after 1,000. Also, after 1,000, the game crashes when I load the 1,000th save! Anyway, that's what I'm experiencing.

Well, I got impatient , and I dreamed up a solution for my problem that didn't work. I copied a save that was the closest (prior to 1,000) to the point I needed to start replaying that quest I mentioned above. I put it in a separate folder.

I then deleted all my saves in the Documents folder, and then I started a new game, saved and exited. I then copied the previous old save from the separated folder to the new save folder in Documents. I ran the game, but the the game didn't recognize the old save. It only recognized the new save.

I'm out of luck. Looks like I can't play this game. The save function has limits I don't know how to deal with. I don't like the idea of starting over, and then having the same issue as before. Looks like I'm done with Deus Ex.

1000 saves? Really?

The only limit i see in scripts is amount of list items: 9999.

Andrievskaya Veronika,

yeah, that right, 1,000. I wish the game was putting out fake news. Nope! That's what I'm experiencing. I know nothing about scripts. Maybe it's 999?

After you reach 1,000 saves, the game writes your save over the previous one, eventually corrupting the save, causing the save to crash. I kid you not. Been there, done that.

No, there is 9999.

Code:
// ----------------------------------------------------------------------
// CreateGamesList()
//
// Creates the listbox containing the save games
//
// Column 0 = Save Description (typed by user)
// Column 1 = Human Readable Date/Time stamp
// Column 2 = Sort column on Julian date
// Column 3 =
// Column 4 = Save File Index (0 - 9999)
// ----------------------------------------------------------------------

function CreateGamesList()

Andrievskaya Veronika,

Whatever the code is your looking at, makes no difference. My game shuts me down when I hit 999. Maybe my original retail game CD (Game of the Year Edition) doesn't work the way you think? I don't believe my game is playing tricks on me. For sure, you're done when you hit 999. How clever is that? I don't think my game is any different from other, similar game CDs. How could it be?
