No, it definitely works for the first karkian. Remember, you're not firing at them from the other side of ALL the axes. Just the last one, where you can easily look beyond the single swinging blade into the room. Wound the first karkian, and chances are he'll charge you. He doesn't stand up well to ...

Don't forget to start shooting your shotgun when you're one ax short of entering the room. The karkians will hear this, and try to charge you through the axes.
