Returning To Previous Maps

So I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect my maps together continuously similar to how TNM is. Is it a modified mapexit that is used? I've got the teleporter working so that you can come back and the items and conversations remain the same. Will teleporters work for the entire game or is there a better way to do this?
