Check when NPC is killed or knocked out

I am thinking of making a small single player mod if I have time. I have never actually finished making a mod, so thought I would give it a go. All I need is help with a few things. In the mod, one mission is a kind of rescue mission and you have to either kill or knock out a certain number of NPCs, but I am unsure how to set a goal that checks to see if the NPCs are dead or unconscious. Here is what I want to do:
The goal is that the player has to either kill or knock out a certain number of NPCs, like NSF terrorists in the map. Once done, the goal will be complete. Another goal is that the player has to find and talk with another NPC. This NPC is under attack from the NPCs you have to kill or knock out. I would like to have happen, if the NPC you have to talk to and save is killed before you kill or knock out the NPCs that are attacking him, you should see a message on screen saying "You failed. Try again" the map should automatically restart after a few seconds after the text appears.
Also, if you knock out more NPCs than kill them, then I wnt a concersation to start with the NPC you have to save, saying one thing, but if you kill more than you knock out, I want a different conversation to start.
Does anyone know how I would do this?
