What's the deal with this, anyhow? Does it send out the data as it calculates it, or only after a batch is finished? I just don't want to shut it off right before it sends out an hours worth of rendering, or something....

Ok, started it back up. It seems to be working a bit faster now.

You can kill the client at any time. It sends back the data every frame so ur not losing anything overly valuable at any specific time.

The connection error I'm seeing as well, it arises whenever the server is down or deadlocked. Anyway, I'm gonna have to make some major changes to improve the stability of the server so we shall resume this experiment tomorrow hopefully.

It either closed itself or crashed without an error message, because without me noticing the program disappeared.

At the bottom of my first post you can find the links. Sometimes I remove the links when I'm updating the client. The links have now been restored and I modified both clients so they don't spam "Connect failed", the programs will now report the error and then go to sleep for an hour.

How many frames are we calculating? Are we talking 2-3 days of CPU time? 30 days?

stats! :p

out of 366 frames, we are on frame 314, been running for 8.5 hours

actually thanks for bringing this up cuz it lead me to yet another bug lol
hint: we havent been doing any meaningful work since frame 255

ok, now we can handle 65535 frames. time to update ur clients

You said the program didn't use Multi-core...but my CPU meter's showing 100% usage on both cores. I take it that's to do with how Vista allocates CPU usage though, so it wouldn't do that on XP?

It doesn't use both cores for me on vista, I have to run 2 instances.

Anyway, I updated and am running full speed :D
One hint for anyone reading, from the commandline use:

Code: Select all

start /LOW vertex2client.exe
This will configure windows to only allocate idle cpu time to the client (with the nice side effect that you can continue working on the PC without it slowing down much).

Dave: I have no idea why that is. Vista must be pretty damn smart to know which instructions of a single-threaded program can be run concurrently though, if that's really whats going on.

I read this thread and said WOW on how you briliantly came up with an idea for us to help you out. I must lend you my cycles =D

I geting "recv timeout".

Why? Do you have to be online, executing the program for the client to connect?

Is this actually doing anything useful yet, or is it still just a test?

I had it running for a while, seemed to work fine (albeit very slowly).
The frame number went back down to zero after a while?
