The Life Support Base

Post by lofaesofa »

Hi all,

Just starting on the life support base and thought i'd get some comments on what you all thought it should look like.

So far i've made a very basic double stacked cyclinder with a dissected ring. Do you think curvy is the way to go, or is more angular better?

EDIT: The models on the left are my mock-ups, the models on the right are the original model.

The round one looks better just because you can instantly see that its high poly. However i would go with the the angular one, it will give you more "head room" later on, adding detail etc.

I really prefer the angular one - I think it suits DX better!

However - I thought the original was more box like?

The angular one seems better, but perhaps you could have the circular one sorta floating around???

Hehe, just so you know, the angular one is the original!

The only way to make it more detailed would be to split the texture. It's already using a packed 256*256 texture.

I was thinking about this some time back. I think angular is the way to go. If you want to improve the model, then extrude some panels, maybe chamfer the ring edges, etc. Some subtle stuff.

i say angular, but with enough polys so that it doesnt look "low-res"

I'm sorry, but I can't make out what object that is (other than "life support base"). Where can I find it ingame (so I can make an useful comment).

Ah, I see now, thank you Ajare :)

I think the angular model would look better, unless you redesign the complete apparatus. To me it seems like the entire machine has been designed with the angular model as base.

I do agree that the new/round one is much prettier, but I doubt it would look as 'realistic' in the context as the original.

The centre part should be smooth, but the ring looks best 6 sides to be honest. Just round it off at the top (so it looks smooth, not jaggedy like the original).

Like this (but with more polygons):

So... err... if the model is finished, perhaps it should be checked off the list?

Not yet, the model is not finished.

As it's a centrepiece model it needs to look very good. I agree with Ajare in that it would benefit from panel and wire extrusions. Fine attention to detail etc.

I think it will be the last model to be finished for phase 1.
