Future updates compatible with current saves?

If I start a new game now will future updates of hdtp be compatible with the saves? Or will the updates only work for new games.

Guessing here but I think it will work as it simply replaces files.

I believe it will 'sort of' work: if you save a game, then update with a future version, everything in the level where you saved the game will remain as it was before: when the game has to load up a new level, however, it will load up all the new stuff.
